International Marketing by Cateora Graham

I thought this book was full of information but really I am not that interested in it. I want to study science so business things are not that interesting to me. When I read this chapter of the book I was able to understand what they were saying. The problem was that I had a hard time expressing ideas or changing the language because the ideas were said and all I could do with them was repeat them. I am not interested in thinking about these ideas. I am not a business person and I do not want to become one. I know that most of the people in this class are interested in business and so if I talked about physics or chemistry they would not be interested. The reverse is true for me. I am excited by talking about experiments in science. I do understand the connection between international business and peace in this world. I think that it really important for business people to think this way. I am a person who always thinks in a scientific way and I too believe that science can lead to peace just as much as business. When science can solve the problems of diseases this can help people all over the world. When science can bring people together to solve problems like AIDS and Global Warming, then that also leads to peace. As long as we are working together it does not matter if we are businessmen or scientists, the results can bring peace to this world.

Reaction to the Research Project

Writing the papers on Alternative Fuels for Cars was interesting for me because I am interested on cars and also in the prices of oil at the present time. However, the work by itself was not easy. I had to learn so many new things and how to do them. I had never wrote this kind of work before. I know now that I have to site every idea that I borrow from other writers or I will be charged with plagiarism. I never knew this before. I also learned that doing this kind of work takes too much time. There is time for reading and taking notes and then the big time for writing the papers. In the end it appeared like my whole life was about alternative fuels for cars! When it was finished, I was so surprised at how small the project looked. I began with books and articles and research and notes but in the end the writing was just a few pages. It seems that these few pages do not really show all of the work behind them.

The presentation of this topic went very well. I was pleased with my control on myself. I think that I knew what I was talking about and this helped me a lot. When I know what I am talking about I am not so nervous. I think also that the class liked the presentation about fuel and cars. I know that most boys are always interested on cars so I hope that they were interested on my topic. I was also pleased with my power point presentation. It was the first time that I did this kind of work by myself. Before I always had to ask other people do the technical things for me but on this project I tried by myself and I am very satisfied with the result.

Discrimination

“Oh Great Spirit keeps me from ever judging a man until I have walked in his moccasins”. This means that I should try not to judge other people unless I have been experiencing their position. Or I am the same as them. I should not judge poor people because I do not know what it is like to be poor. I should not judge Christians because I am not one of them. I should not judge women because I am a man. I should not judge black people because I am white.
This is very easy to say. I cannot do it. I judge all the time and I think everyone does too. All people have ideas about others. This is a kind of discrimination because usually these ideas that they have are wrong. Many people think all Arabs are terrorists. Whites think that black people are criminals. We should know that this is not true. There are Arabs who are terrorists but there are Christians and Jews who are also terrorists. There are black people who are criminals but this is also true for whites , reds and yellows. There are jails everywhere in the world that is full of all kinds of people.
For me, I come from a culture that is very strict. We must marry Saudis, not even other Arabs. I know this is discrimination to some people but it is our traditional way. Is it wrong? I don’t know. Is it right? I also don’t know. It is just our way. We do not want to hurt other people but this the way it works.
I think this is really true for most people. A Christian family wants their children to marry Christians. Jews want to marry Jews. Blacks want to marry blacks. Is this discrimination? Some people would say so but I am not sure.

Animal testing

Animal experimentation is very essential for human sake. A lot of experiments that have been don, have leaded the scientists to discover new treatments for several diseases. And all of that have benefited many patients in curing their sickness. We have to use animals in experiment if it’s extremely necessary but at the same time we have to use them wisely. Animals have sprits and they can feel the pain.however, critics frequently say that animal testing is cruel and completely unnecessary but this is not true. It is the most necessary part on scientific search. Today all of these drugs are commonly used for people to make their lives better. None of them would have been possible without having been tested on animals first.

Population Growth

Population Growth

There are too many people nowadays on the earth. There is not enough food to feed all of these people. More people are being born every day and old people are living longer than ever before. Medicine is keeping more and more people alive. The result is that not enough people are dying and too many people are living. The earth has a limit of space for people to live and also a limit of land to grow food. The problem is that more and more people are building houses and apartments on land that should be used for farmers to grow food. The problem is that too many people don’t want to live in places that are far from their home land such as desert. So people build their houses where the farmers need to grow the food. However, governments will need to make special rules to solve this problem. Countries will have to make laws like in China where families can only have one child. They will also have to make laws that people cannot make houses on farming land. That land must be used to grow food. This is a big problem in many countries because all of the people want to live in the most convenience weather and that is where the farm land is. farm land is begin to be used for houses, apartments and offices.

Four Types of Love

Four Types of Love

The lecture today was interesting and was given by a good speaker, Judith Castle who used understandable language. She was also relaxed and made the class feel comfortable. She encouraged the students to speak and to ask questions. I actually liked this method of teaching.

The lecture was about the four different types of love: philia, romance, agape and eros. Miss Castle explained each of these kinds to us. Philia is the love of friends and is characterized by loyalty and trust; in this kind of love we need the support of our friends and their trust as well so that we can make good judgments. Romance is passionate and is characterized by falling in love with another person; in this kind of love endorphins are produced in the brain and this makes people have strong feelings for others. Agape is human caring and kindness that we show to other people, even to strangers; we have compassion and empathy for others. Eros is the love we have for ourselves; this is the amount we love what we do or who we are.

I learned that each person is powerless because we are all influenced by others. In terms of love this works so that we expect that others have the same kind of feelings about love that we do. After she explained the four kinds of love I realized that I do understand these different kinds. I have experienced all of them. This is the way the brain is constructed to understand these different kinds of love.

I enjoyed this lecture especially when she asked us if we won the lottery what we would do with the money. I was shy to answer her because she asked me first. I wanted to say that I would like to give money to charity and to help others but what I said was that I would buy a Ferrari and have a good time. What I really believe is that I would do both things. I would spend money on myself and I would help others.

Happiness

I am sitting in my apartment now (10 o’clock Monday) and a lot of people are sure sounding happy outside. I think the Montreal Ccanadian have won the hockey game tonight.
This is an example I think of a collective happiness. The celebrating people all belong to the same group who like that team. This is a wonderful experience for that group of people. This is one form of happiness that we can all relate to. I have had this kind of experience when my favourite team won an important soccer game. All the fans were on the streets, honking horns of cars and driving and drifting around in celebration.
There are different things though that contribute to our general sense of happiness and these are mostly in relation to our relationships with other people and with God. I believe that the article we read is correct when it says that the people who are the happiest are those who are in relationships like married people. I also believe that having faith is very important to a sense of happiness. Faith gives all of us hope and profound peace of mind. It takes problems away from us and make them to a bigger power.
I did think before that money would give happiness but the article sure told me that is not true. I was really impressed with the statistics on the lack of correlation between wealth and happiness. I particularly like the comment that the person on the bus is often as happy as the person driving the Mercedes. I did not think that this was true before but I understand better now.
